!MED PAY BASICS
Med Pay is an optional and additional
insurance coverage to the mandatory Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage insurance (PD). According to the Perazzo Law Firm, Med Pay is among the most valuable additional insurance coverage policies available for motorists that only carry the mandatory PIP or PD in Florida.
But how does Med Pay work and how does it benefit those that suffer bodily injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident?
Firstly, Med Pay covers 100% of the accident victim's medical expenses in line with the coverage limit, which how much you are covered for according to how much coverage purchased from the insurance provider. For example, a motorist may purchase $5000 in coverage, for which the insured or policy holder will receive $15,000 (PIP $10K - MedPay $5K) to cover the medical expenses from a motor vehicle accident.
Med Pay also covers the medical expenses for the policy holder and any passengers that suffer bodily injury regardless of fault. However, Med Pay will not cover any other losses such as property damage or lost wages. In other words, Med Pay only covers medical bills from injuries in a motor vehicle related incident.
Med Pay is of great value when a motor vehicle accident victim carries no health insurance. Thus, motorists that carry health insurance don't necessarily need to purchase Med Pay coverage, as their health insurance will most likely cover their medical expenses from any accident that leads to personal injuries.
Purchasing Med Pay is less expensive than PIP and PD coverage. However, there is a provision linked to Med Pay stipulating that the insurance provider receive payback for medical expenses if the accident victim is compensated by the negligent party, or the motorist at fault for the accident which led to bodily injury. PIP does not require payback for medical expenses or losses. This subtle difference makes PIP of greater value than Med Pay, though it does not take away from the benefits it provides to motorists or passengers that do not carry health insurance.
Though the cost of purchasing motor vehicle coverage varies according to many factors, the minimum coverage for insuring a motor vehicle in Florida with PIP and PD can range from $150 - $400 per month, though calculated annually. Med Pay coverage can range from $1.50 - $40 month depending on the coverage limit per accident incident. The minimum purchasable is $1000 with the maximum available set at $25000.
Med Pay will cover the following medical expenses:
- Ambulance Fees
- Hospital Treatment
- Healthcare professional services fees
- X-rays
- MRI's
- C-Scans
- Surgery
- Rehabilitation
- Nursing Services
- Dental Assistance and/or surgery
- Funeral Expenses
